When I was at university I proposed an essay titled ‘Why all this Backstageness?’
I had become fed up with reading about artists rather than art, with seeing Have I Got A Little More News For You, and with Xtra-Factor, which itself was a backstage version of a series that covers the backstage workings of producing a pop star.
I had a great chat with my essay tutor about it, which can be summarised as him saying ‘I think most of what you want to look at has already been considered.’
Basically I was ranting at Postmodernism. In 2012. That was never going to fly.
