Fifty Walks: 38

Anti-dérive, Copenhagen, DenmarkThe dérive, or drift, is a kind of urban walk in which the walker aimlessly wanders the city, following no map, visiting off-limits spaces, getting to know the hidden, unseen, and neglected parts of the city.*  With only one day in Copenhagen my walk was the exact opposite.  I followed a tourist map's self-guided walking tour though the most scenic and well-known parts of the old centre of town. The dotted line on the map took me past canal [...]

pedestrian – Pedestrian Blog

The URL leads to the Pedestrian Blog hosted on Sandra Cowan’s website, which focuses on themes related to walking, art, and urban space. The blog features reflections, essays, and project documentation that explore walking as a cultural and artistic practice. It engages with the ways pedestrian movement intersects with environmental, social, and spatial contexts, often considering walking as a method of inquiry and creative expression within the urban landscape. The entries include discussions on walking art projects, public space interventions, and the experiential qualities of navigating city environments on foot. The blog situates these practices within broader discourses of cultural geography and environmental psychology, highlighting the significance of walking in understanding place, identity, and community dynamics. It serves as a resource for those interested in the intersections of art, geography, and pedestrian culture.

GPS, geo-poetic system

Geo-poetic system was a term coined by Lucy Frears during locative media art research (published 2017). The basis of geopoetics, a theory and practice developed by Scottish philosopher and poet Kenneth White, is to connect humans to the lines of the earth (White cited in McManus 2007: 183), or ‘what’s out there’ (Ingold 1993; 154; White 2005: 200; White 2006: 9). The contact White describes is often between the human mind and the earth, what he calls ‘landscape-mindscape’ (Legendre 2011: 121). Because of the embodied nature of locative media experiences using a smartphone in landscape for these walking art experiences using gps technologies Frears expanded this notion to being ‘landscape-mindscape-bodyscape’ (2017).
