Walk 58

Upper Coulee walk, Lethbridge, ABWalking and talking make a good pair. This is one of those times in my life (there have been others) where almost all the social contact I have is through going for walks with people. The walks, which are always important, become even more important when otherwise I spend entire days sitting in my house alone. Pandemic walks are a big deal. I'm sure there will be dissertations written about it. A very simple activity, but it's a way to connect with nature and the [...]

The URL leads to the Pedestrian Blog hosted on Sandra Cowan’s website, which focuses on themes related to walking, art, and urban space. The blog features reflections, essays, and project documentation that explore walking as a cultural and artistic practice. It engages with the ways pedestrian movement intersects with environmental, social, and spatial contexts, often considering walking as a method of inquiry and creative expression within the urban landscape. The entries include discussions on walking art projects, public space interventions, and the experiential qualities of navigating city environments on foot. The blog situates these practices within broader discourses of cultural geography and environmental psychology, highlighting the significance of walking in understanding place, identity, and community dynamics. It serves as a resource for those interested in the intersections of art, geography, and pedestrian culture.

hybrid flaneur/flaneuse

Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse has become a performative “orchestrator” of steps and technologies – of sensory and emotional encounters. It is this oscillation between the poetic, the socio-technological, the geographical and the emotional that shifts the meaning of flanerie and walking in the 21st century. Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse can be also described in line with the cultural and aesthetic trajectories of the 20th century ambulatory practices. Therefore, a hybrid flaneur/flaneuse could be a creative merging of the romanticised view of early flaneur, the radical tactics and political implications of psychogeography and the performative/site-oriented elements of Fluxus and Land Art – all considered through a wide range of embodied media, social and geographical sensitivities.
