Listening Researcher & Practitioner: I fell into the world of soundwalking through my PhD – I wanted to use creative mobile methods for investigating experiences of seaside gentrification on the UK south coast. As a musician, I wondered how sound and listening could be used, and discovered a whole new world! I developed “participatory listening research” and through a recent post-doc have been able to expand this toolbox for policy engagement. I work with sonic artist Bela Emerson and Brighton & Hove Music for Connection. Together we have developed an Interactive Listening Walk practice, a form of participatory soundwalking, designing these inclusively with people who might not normally take part in sound art (older people, refugees, migrants, people accessing mental health support etc). So far we’ve delivered 30 Interactive Listening Walks for over 300 people, connecting people to natural and urban environments for wellbeing and community engagement projects
