Lorna Powell
Lorna Powell is a cultural producer and programmer working across community engagement, arts and humanities research, walking and public space. Previously Public Programme Producer at The Line, East London’s outdoor sculpture trail, and currently Public Engagement Officer at the Centre for Public Engagement Practice in Arts and Humanities, based at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, Lorna brings people, place and creative encounter together to challenge normative meaning making and systemic barriers to the arts, reconstituting spatial experiences through anti-oppressive and care-oriented perspectives. At the Centre for Public Engagement Practice in Arts and Humanities, she is leading a project titled “Walking, Power, Inclusion”, funded by UK Research and Innovation. This project facilitates collaboration between researchers, artists and creative practitioners, with disciplines spanning psychogeography, gender, performance, activism, photography and ethnography. At the heart of this cross-sector, multi-disciplinary project is the concept of “conviviality” (conceptualised by Professor Paul Gilroy and embodied by participating researcher, Dr Manal Massalha), activated by a series of walking events in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery, programmed during their inaugural Backyard Biennial, 15 July - 6 September 2026.
