Maurice Azzano, PhD is a professor at the Conestoga College School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Canada, an academic researcher, and a soundscape artist.
My interests centre around becoming a Soundwalker. Soundwalking shifts awareness from the visual onto a deeper acoustic field, resulting in a fundamental transition from a focus on linear thinking and visual space to a more multi-sensory, simultaneous, and interconnected acoustic space. The shift, as described by prophetic media theorist Marshall McLuhan, represents a transformation from a predominantly linear, structured, and visually oriented mode of communication to a multi-sensory, simultaneous, and holistic way of perceiving and interacting with the world. I apply phenomenological and transdisciplinary perspectives to the study of McLuhan’s Laws of Media in exploring his Tetradic approach to analysis. Step by step, I want to immerse myself, a soundwalking artist-as-researcher, into the waters of collective knowledge.
