Nici Cumpston is an accomplished artist, curator, educator, and writer with a deep commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. A graduate of the University of South Australia, she has curated numerous exhibitions, including national and international shows, and worked with hundreds of artists. From 2008 to 2025, Nici served as the inaugural curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of South Australia and as Artistic Director of the Tarnanthi Festival. In 2025, she became Director of the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia.

Her work has been exhibited worldwide, and she has contributed to key collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Victoria. Nici’s artistic practice spans over two decades, with her work held in prestigious collections and recognized with multiple commissions. In 2020, she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for her outstanding contributions to Indigenous art. Nici’s passion for empowering Indigenous artists is matched only by her dedication to fostering meaningful cultural exchange and recognition in the art world.
