András J. Molnár
András has his background in computer science, outdoor tourism and Christian theology. He has been working on trails both as an IT/GIS professional, tourism planner as well as on the field as a hiking guide and trail maintenance and signage work leader. His innovation and research interests span from trail system and network assessment through visitor management and monitoring, towards pilgrimages and Christian spirituality in nature and along trails. He worked for the Mary Way Association coordinating the development of an international pilgrimage network in Central-Eastern Europe (2007-09), for the Hungarian Hiking Federation for consolidating and updating the national trail network and marking system (2012-13), co-founded the Viatorum Trail Expert group and Pilgrimage Workshop backed by the Viator Association for Hiking and Culture (2016-), the Pilgrimage Academy conference series (2021-) and recently, the Budapest Pilgrimage Centre (2024-). He used to co-chair the Trails & Sustainability and Trails & Knowledge Task Teams of the World Trails Network (2020-22, 2022-25 resp.) and is one of the leading initiators of the Trailology Collective (2024-), a global network for trail studies. He took part in developing several new trail and hiking/pilgrimage initiatives in Hungary and Central Europe. Currently he is an associate professor at the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary, a senior researcher at HUN-REN SZTAKI Budapest, and an external lecturer at EKKE Catholic University in Eger, Hungary. He is a regular invited speaker at the White Mountain Environmental Field School and the Northeast Alpine Stewardship Centre in New Hampshire, USA. He leads trail study tours, mountain hikes and nature walks with spiritual connection, and gives counseling and life coaching for individuals.
