What it really feels like to be a person who doesn’t take a dog on a walk

People in the country think I’m a serial killer, because I walk without a dog. It’s obvious I have bad intentions – and most probably, murder on my mind – in the absence of a furry companion trotting to heel. “Where’s your dog?” locals ask suspiciously.  Sometimes I say the dog’s been left behind, like

At the stupa I meet friends from Mexico, Hong Kong, Poland, we stop to eat momos together, and share stories and hopes. We walk clockwise, together and apart, joining the street dogs who are always here.Location: Boudhanath, Kathmandu, NepalLength: 2 kmCompanions: severalDate: 11 June, 2024 [...]

flakkari

“Icelandic culture is infused with stories of travel. When names were needed for modern machines, the technology that enables our imaginations to travel, words were chosen that centred on the quality of roaming. Thus the neologism for laptop is fartölva, formed from the verb far, meaning to migrate, and tölva – migrating computer’; its companion, the external hard drive, is a flakkari. The latter word can also mean ‘wanderer’ or ‘vagrant’. In the end it’s the wanderers we rely on.” From Nancy Campbell’s “The Library of Ice”.
