Walking the Weight of the World

A mulch "cultivator" emerged from collective and historical walks. This response to Rodin’s Burghers of Calais brings the weight, rhythm, and resilience of human movement into a museum through a path shaped by real and imagined journeys.

Spiral Jetty

Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970) is a 1,500-foot-long earthwork made from 6,000 tons of basalt rock, winding into the Great Salt Lake. The spiral form reflects salt crystal deposits and explores themes of entropy, transformation, and the passage of time in the landscape.

Water, Earth, and Peace: Coming home to where we come from

Walking in transitional, interstitial spaces where Water and Earth meet is special. From walking-with and sensing the presence of rock and water bodies, on the banks of Lake Prespa (Greece) or the River Maas (Holland), it emerges to feel Water as home and relational peace quality, which inspires humans to create. To co-create and find forms for joint walking, artistic work, and ecosomatic practice, as ways of storytelling with Earth & Water.

The project addresses the conference theme question: what questions does the ground you walk on raise? Here, walking is seen as an archaeological process transcribed into a Wunderkammer of roaming arte/ecofacts, a hoard of perambulatory acquisition, a strolling epistemology. These are walks of collecting found objects and an installation that articulates the embodied culture of

Breath-stream

"Breath-stream" (2020) is a musical composition connecting human breath with local wind currents, where performers first identify wind direction via Earth Wind Map before aligning their breath rhythm to the wind. Recordings were collected from 13 different locations between early 2020, creating a platform that links individual internal experience with environmental awareness.

oversupinate

People who jog, run, and sprint have their share of problems that slow-moving people can barely comprehend. One is oversupination. As the OED defines it, to oversupinate is “To run or walk so that the weight falls upon the outer sides of the feet to a greater extent than is necessary, desirable, etc.” A 1990 Runner’s World article gets to the crux of the problem: “It’s hard to ascertain exactly what percentage of the running population oversupinates, but it’s a fraction of the people who think they do.” Credits to Mark Peters.
