This session explores how gender shapes walking, space and artistic expression. Through feminist, queer and postcolonial perspectives, participants examine walking as a strategy of resistance, visibility and empowerment.

'In Conversation' event launches the Women Walking Festival and will see Kerri Andrews provide an insight into the history of women walking, re-examining assumptions of gender and exercise, before moving to consider contemporary aspects of women walking and walking the pandemic more generally.

Between 2006 and 2013 the writer Taran Khan made multiple trips to Kabul, Afghanistan, a city she felt was misunderstood by many outsiders. Chance Encounters
Chance Encounters (1994) by Rut Blees Luxemburg is a nocturnal performance and photographic series exploring women’s presence in the urban night. Cos-playing as executives, Luxemburg engaged strangers, revealing traces, atmospheres, and social currents of London streets.
The Mythic Being: I am the Locus
The Mythic Being: I am the Locus is a series of five photos showing Adrian Piper’s 1975 performance as her alter ego, the Mythic Being, walking through Harvard Square. The photos explore racial identity, invisibility, and internal vs. external experiences.

Perambulator
Perambulator is an ongoing walking artwork exploring city life with a pram. Using lived experience, it reveals gendered space, care and mobility through detours, obstacles and collective walks, making visible how streets shape access, inequality and everyday movement.
Armor
Armor (2015) by Kubra Khademi is a provocative performance in which the artist wore a metal breastplate mimicking exaggerated female anatomy, challenging societal norms and gender roles in Kabul. The piece led to exile after violent backlash, marking a pivotal moment in her career.
Walk a Mile in her Veil
Walk a Mile in Her Veil explores Arab identity and feminism, inviting visitors to wear the veil and experience its complexity. The work challenges stereotypes, promotes empathy, and sparks dialogue about women's agency and the multifaceted meanings of the veil.
