Labyrinths
Highlights
Double Star: Antares
Double Star: Antares (1986–88) by Athena Tacha was a site-specific public sculpture in Cincinnati’s Hyde Park. Featuring 27 brick walls forming two star-like structures, it explored astronomy, spatial form, and landscape, but was later dismantled.
Mirror Labyrinth – NYC
Mirror Labyrinth – NYC is a freestanding mirrored installation with varying-height lamellae forming interconnected curves. Reflecting viewers, surroundings, and Manhattan’s skyline, it creates a disorienting, labyrinth-like experience linking Brooklyn Bridge Park to the cityscape.
Fissures, Holes, Limbs: Breathing Dislocated Scales
“Fissures, Holes, Limbs” is an eco-somatic night walk centering disability. A wide hat invites others to join and acts as a guide, marking the accessible width needed for wheelchair users as we move together under the full moon.
Walking in LifePlace
The paper presents three walking narrative activations in Durban: Ways of Seeing, a student-led sensory and photojournalistic exploration of multicultural neighborhoods; KulturKonneKt, tours connecting citizens with the city’s social heritage and cultural diversity; and The Labyrinth, guided sensory walks for creatives culminating in a community-built labyrinth that links local and global experiences. These projects emphasize observational skills, social cohesion, cultural understanding, and multisensory engagement with urban spaces.
