And the prize winner is…

As of now, the Marŝarto Awards and the Sound Walk September Awards remain the only awards in the world solely dedicated to walking art, recognizing the artistic and conceptual significance of walking as an art form. It encourages more artists to explore embodied, site-specific, and participatory practices while reinforcing walking’s role in reimagining public space and challenging dominant narratives of ownership and movement.
More than just a gesture of recognition, the prize provides resources for artists to develop ambitious projects, explore new territories, and engage communities in meaningful ways. Given that walking art almost entirely exists outside commercial galleries, a cash award plays a crucial role in sustaining artists whose work goes often underfunded or overlooked.
With that in mind, a jury of peers has just selected the recipients of the 2024 Marŝarto Prize. Congratulations to Tamsin Grainger for her work Walking Like a Tortoise, with an honorable mention for Marie-Anne Lerjen’s Sweat Mapping.
Today is also Global Wetlands Day, a backdrop of my public talk on Walking Art and WALC at the Castle of Hof ter Welle in Beveren, Belgium this weekend. Together with local walking artist Stefaan van Biesen and artist-activist Fred Adam, caretaker of the El Hondo Wetland near Alicante, Spain, we explore connections for future walking arts activities in the nearby wetlands of the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe, at the border of Belgium and the Netherlands.
In the wake of the WALC project—rooted in Prespa, a transboundary lake ecosystem that serves as the physical base for an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Art—we are initiating a dialogue on walking’s potential as a tool for environmental awareness, social change, and collective experience. By engaging with wetlands and border landscapes, we seek to inspire new ways of thinking about ecological responsibility and agency.
These themes, along with the vital role of walking arts in a world in transition, will shape the discussions at the Prespa International Walking Arts Encounters in July. Practical information for potential participants will also be the focus of an upcoming online roundtable at the next Walc Listen Café this Tuesday.
With a new open call for nodes in the collective spirit of WALC, we warmly invite groups, collectives, and initiatives to join us in inspiring change through walking—rethinking our world’s urgent needs and supporting artists in creating thought-provoking, socially engaged works that connect people, places, and ideas in meaningful ways.
