New dawn on the rise / Time renews with brighter skies / Hope blooms as years fly

29 Dec, 2024

The end is nigh. That's the end of the year, of course. But considering the rise of Trump, the never-ending genocide of Palestinians by Israel, the threatening societal breakdown in Syria, the creeping rise of the right in Germany and across Europe, the never-ending conflict in Ukraine, and the insane wealth hoarded by Musk and his extreme-right fundamentalist cohorts, and the way they are putting that wealth to use, are just a few of the many vectors for societal breakdown we are forced to endure. How to counter this crap?
The Mayans might have predicted 2012 as the end of time, but from where I'm sitting, it might just be that they were off by a good dozen years.

On the other hand, also from where I'm sitting, that is, just out of São Paulo, in Brazil, summer has just begun, and, as is typical, the start of the new year also means the start of the countdown to carnival, now just two months away.

So, as per the haiku in the title, I like to think that a new dawn is on the rise, and the brighter skies that have been welcoming me these past weeks are evidence of time renewing itself, and, as years fly, hope blooms, as opposed to fades.
Though, I'll be fair, I have to squeeze my eyes a bit to convince myself of this.

If you like haikus, and who doesn't, we are running a haiku competition in the run up to our writer's salon Words to Light the Dark, on January 7. Our guests, Polly Atkin, Sophie Yeo, and Chantal Lyons, invite you to compose a haiku on the salon’s theme of writing wild and wild-ish places into being. To participate, you have to follow our Bluesky account @walklistencreate, and you have to skeet / post your haiku adding the hashtag #wlchaiku. The closing date is Sunday 5 January, 2025, and haikus will be discussed during the salon. One lucky haijin (that is, someone who writes haikus) will win a special prize.

I'll let you go back to your Christmas dinner leftovers, and your New Year's resolutions, but, I'll also entertain you with a few quick stats. In 2024, WLC welcomed 300 additional contributing members, saw you add 136 walking pieces to the archives, as well as 173 events for our events listing. Thank you!

So, whatever happens, keep walking.

Using ancient maps from the National Library of Scotland and drawing new ones, Tamsin Grainger walked around the edge of Edinburgh in Walking Like a Tortoise. The result was more walks, creative responses and art-making, much questioning, conversation & radical hospitality.
With Tastes Like Home, a co-creation between 8 artists in Bedford, worked with hundreds of stories of food memories from members of the public, to construct an audio trail full of heart and flavour.
