Oh boy! It’s the SWS24 shortlist!
It's the start of November. Some might argue that the biggest news, this time of the year, this year, is the American presidential elections. On the face of it, and considering the considerable global media attention this tends to get, these people might be on to something.
But, they are not.
The beginning of November really means it's time for the announcement of the Sound Walk September Awards shortlist. Truly the only thing that matters. At least, around this time of the year.
We saw a significant increase in the number of submissions for SWS24 compared to last year, which meant that our Online Jury managed to do a superb job in narrowing down the playing field to 15 shortlisted works, two of which are out-of-competition, while one of them is the "public's choice".
This year's shortlisted creators have not (yet) been too dedicated in listing their countries with their profiles, so we're, at the time of writing, only sure of one submission from the US, with other identified locations all being in Europe.
What we can say, is that, generally speaking, the quality of this year's submissions surpassed that of last year's, which meant that the cutoff for compiling the shortlist was a painful exercise; the difference in jury-awarded scores was small for, roughly, the top half of the submitted pieces.
This year, for the first time, we have added a "public's choice" to the shortlist. This is the piece with the most votes, from the public, you, which didn't make it to the shortlist based on the jury votes.
Now, the SWS Grand Jury will deliberate and select a winner and honourable mention, which will be rewarded with 500 and 200 euros respectively.
As you might know, and perhaps you're even one of our much-needed benefactors, we're able to offer this prize money because of support from our community, you. So, if you're not already, do consider supporting our work. We both need it, and really appreciate it.
Over the next two months, the creators of the shortlisted pieces for SWS24 will publish short essays on their work. These will aid the Grand Jury in deciding on who should claim the top spot, and will give you insight into their creative processes.
Indeed, with the voting on the shortlist for the Marŝarto24 Awards currently underway, these are going to be some busy months.
We're already, of course, taking submissions for SWS25 and Marŝarto25. What are you creating this year?
Work created after January 1, 2024 is eligible for both of these. Don't hesitate, if you've already got something that's eligible, you can submit your work right now.
Keep walking!
