The power of audio with the love of the outdoors

15 Sep, 2024

This week’s mailing is introduced by Francesca Turauskis. She is the founder of the Tremula Network that includes a growing community of podcasters who love adventure and the outdoors, and is hosting the inaugural Tremula Festival in Brighton and on the South Downs.  We are delighted to have an opportunity to inspire some of them to turn their skills to composing sound walks and making walking art!

I have been deep in the final preparations for Tremula Festival – a new event combining the power of audio with a love of the outdoors. The festival takes place 20th-21st September in the South Downs and Brighton, and one of the things I am most looking forward to for the weekend is actually getting outside.

It’s ironic, but working so hard to pull together a festival about getting outdoors has kept me tied to my laptop rather tightly for the last few months. I’ve not been out enjoying this September half as much as I would have liked to, and I’ve mostly been walking through my headphones.

Luckily, there are endless individuals and initiatives who are creating work around walking, including, of course, walk · listen · create. This website fills me with inspiration to do just that – go for a walk, listen to some soundwalks and get back to creating some audio art for myself.

Andrew Stuck is joining us in Brighton on 21st September to lead a walkshop on getting to grips with soundwalks, and I am excited to crossover from my own medium – podcasts and RSS feeds – to learn something new. Much of my own work is about whisking people away via audio to a place we can get to, and the site-specific aspects of soundwalks in something I can’t wait to explore more in the future.

snudge

The first sense of snudging refers to being cheap, stingy, miserly, and Scrooge-like. Such penny-pinching behavior isn’t associated with great posture, and perhaps that’s why the word later referred to walking with a bit of a stoop. An English-French dictionary from 1677 captures the essence of snudgery: “To Snudge along, or go like an old Snudge, or like one whose Head is full of business.” Snudging is a little like trudging. Credits to Mark Peters.
