WALC fait la force

26 Aug, 2024

Today, one of the big challenges in Europe, which is facing wars and threats from oppressive governments, is the slow decline of rural communities. Walking Art is a way of creating art that focuses on bringing people together, unlike traditional art forms. It tackles social issues and encourages people to get involved in their communities and make a difference. Unfortunately, both community-based art and walking are underrepresented in today’s art world.

The concepts of landscape, place, and space play important roles in community life. Rural areas in Europe that are being abandoned can be revived through community-based art, with walking being a key part of that effort. Walking Art looks beyond just creating objects or images; walking artists are part of the community and share their personal experiences.

That's what the WALC network is about, created by seven partners from five countries in both Southern and Northern Europe, focusing on social strength in struggling rural areas. They want to enhance places like Prespa to become hubs for walking arts and other regions where they have launched walking art projects.

In a few weeks there will be an online seminar discussing how walking arts connect with community life and rural nature, featuring key artists, curators, and researchers in the field.

The seminar will include a discussion with curator Lydia Matthews (from Athens and New York), artist/researcher Clare Qualmann (from the Walking Artists Network and University of East London), and nomadic artist Jez Hastings (from the UK). This will be followed by a roundtable discussion led by curator and activist Nina Felshin (from the US), along with WALC partners Clara Gari (from Catalonia), Natacha Antao Moutinho (from Portugal), Sylvie Marchand (from France), Anna Luyten (from Belgium), Andrew Stuck (from the UK), and Yannis Ziogas (from Greece).

The event will conclude with an invitation by the artistic coordinators for other organizations, schools, groups, collectives, and artists to get involved. Join the free seminar on September 17th to learn about ways to participate in the WALC residency program or collaborate from wherever you are.

shoggle, worple

Since the 1500s, shoggle has been a word for various sorts of shaking. No wonder it became a word for unsteady walking in the 1800s. Zombies and toddlers are big shogglers. Another term sometimes applied to such precarious ambling is warpling. Credits to Mark Peters.
