Walkmobile and world wide wandering

22 Sep, 2024

In 1975, Hermann Knoflacher wandered through Vienna in his "Walkmobile" or Gehzeug, a walking installation designed to highlight how much space cars take up. Car-Free Sunday, a global initiative encouraging reduced car usage to promote environmental awareness, embodies the message Knoflacher's Walkmobile sought to convey. Observed in cities worldwide, Car-Free Sunday often coincides with World Car Free Day on September 22. For example, in Brussels, the whole city turns pedestrian-friendly, while in London, local streets become "play streets" where people can walk and play, free from traffic.

The walking celebration continues with the World Wide Wander on September 27, hosted by Street Wisdom. This event invites participants globally to engage in "walkshops" designed to slow down, connect with their surroundings, and reflect. The program includes online and in-person sessions, incorporating guided walks, quests, and shared discussions, blending mindfulness, neuroscience, and creativity.

Between now and Friday, you can also join the free Confluence event, showcasing walking actions across Europe. This Wednesday 25 September, Clara Gari of Nau Côclea will host the next event together with the artists Anna Piatou (Greece) and Alba Sauleda (Catalonia), recipients of the Grand Tour 2024 residency grant.

slare

To saunter, to be slovenly (The Dialect of Cumberland – Robert Ferguson, 1873). Rarely used in Cumbria now but has a meaning of to walk slowly, to amble, to walk with no particular purpose. Used for example in the ballad Billy Watson’s Lonnin written by Alexander Craig Gibson of Harrington, Cumbria in 1872 “Yan likes to trail ow’r t’ Sealand-fields an’ watch for t’ commin’ tide, Or slare whoar t’Green hes t’ Ropery an’ t’ Shore of ayder side “(Translation: One likes to trail over to Sealand Fields and watch for the coming tide, Or slare over to where the Green has the ropery and the Shore on the other side) Billy Watson’s Lonning (lonning – dialect for lane) still exists and can be found at Harrington, Cumbria.
