The Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) is a nonprofit organization and professional society representing field stations and marine laboratories, of which there are approximately 1,200 across the globe. The mission of OBFS is to serve its member stations in ways that increase their effectiveness in enabling research, education, and outreach. The organization pursues its mission in a manner that maximizes belonging, sustainability, and transparency.
Biological field stations and marine labs are place-based institutions primarily focused on science research, science education, and public engagement with science. In the past few decades, there has been a growing interest among field stations and marine labs to invite artists to participate in artist residency programs, art education, and community arts events. A term mostly used by town planners or architects to describe the short-cut paths created by people. So a path around a square ‘green’ will often have a desire path cutting off the corners. Town planners recognise them as an admission that the initial path was put in the wrong place. Called ‘Elephant Paths’ in some countries.
