Festival Proposals by Peter Liversidge consists of 103 hand-typed suggestions sent to Ingleby Gallery during the Edinburgh Festival. Ranging from fantastical to feasible, some were realized as artworks and performances, while others exist solely as ideas. Dog Walking was one of these Festival Proposals.
For the Idle Walk of the Year, the Berserk group carried objects from the Ethnological Museum to Amalienborg Square as slowly as possible, while Eric polished the Palace square with petroleum, continuing the museum’s long-standing floor-care tradition.
In the summer of 1995 I performed a walk with a leaking can of blue paint in the city of São Paulo. The walk was then read as a poetic gesture of sorts. In June 2004, I re-enacted that same performance with a leaking can of green paint by tracing a line following the portion of the ‘Green Line’ that runs through the municipality of Jerusalem.
hybrid flaneur/flaneuse
Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse has become a performative “orchestrator” of steps and technologies – of sensory and emotional encounters. It is this oscillation between the poetic, the socio-technological, the geographical and the emotional that shifts the meaning of flanerie and walking in the 21st century. Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse can be also described in line with the cultural and aesthetic trajectories of the 20th century ambulatory practices. Therefore, a hybrid flaneur/flaneuse could be a creative merging of the romanticised view of early flaneur, the radical tactics and political implications of psychogeography and the performative/site-oriented elements of Fluxus and Land Art – all considered through a wide range of embodied media, social and geographical sensitivities.
