Video recording of a talk that introduces WALKING, a symposium exploring practices of walking as modes of perception, spatial inquiry, and collective reflection. Situated in relation to Lucius Burckhardt’s Spaziergangswissenschaft, WALKING brings together positions from landscape architecture, art, research, and curatorial practice to examine how environments are read, constructed, and contested through movement.
The presentation by Violeta Burckhardt and Johannes Hedinger, moderated by Simona Vermeire, introduces the work of ILEA and Studio ERDE Landscape Architecture, revisits the previous symposium from 2025, and outlines the forthcoming 2026 edition and accompanying publication. It will also discuss the symposium’s formats, open call, and ongoing invitation for participation.
This videoed event connects to the WALC Online Course`s module Walking as Critical Spatial Practice.

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.
WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.
