2020: The Walk; a journey from Granada to Helsinki to raise awareness about the climate emergency.

2020: The Walk

2020: The Walk is a project by artist, researcher and activist Marta Moreno Muñoz, walking from Granada to Helsinki -with some trains and a ferry, and from there up North to the permafrost- to help spread the word about Extinction Rebellion, a global environmental movement whose stated aim is to use non-violent civil disobedience to compel governments to take action to avoid triggering tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse.

The artist Oscar Martín, who accompanied Marta throughout the journey, converged in 2020: The Walk as an act born out of the political desire to put the body in the face of the eco-social crisis we are living. During the 4000 kilometers, they connected with fellow XR rebels and other climate change activists from related movements in Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

The journey has been documented in a film and a book, with the collaboration by activists and experts in different fields. After the screening of the film, a new platform of climate cultural activism will be presented: La Cultura Declara la Emergencia (CDE Spanish hub), and a debate will take place.

Last screening at Cinema Truffaut (Girona) on the 2nd July 2024 during the II International Conference Walking Art and Relational Geographies. Transhumance, nomadisms and migrations.

pedestrian acts

By de Certeau: In “Walking in the City”, de Certeau conceives pedestrianism as a practice that is performed in the public space, whose architecture and behavioural habits substantially determine the way we walk. For de Certeau, the spatial order “organises an ensemble of possibilities (e.g. by a place in which one can move) and interdictions (e.g. by a wall that prevents one from going further)” and the walker “actualises some of these possibilities” by performing within its rules and limitations. “In that way,” says de Certeau, “he makes them exist as well as emerge.” Thus, pedestrians, as they walk conforming to the possibilities that are brought about by the spatial order of the city, constantly repeat and re-produce that spatial order, in a way ensuring its continuity. But, a pedestrian could also invent other possibilities. According to de Certeau, “the crossing, drifting away, or improvisation of walking privilege, transform or abandon spatial elements.” Hence, the pedestrians could, to a certain extent, elude the discipline of the spatial order of the city. Instead of repeating and re-producing the possibilities that are allowed, they can deviate, digress, drift away, depart, contravene, disrupt, subvert, or resist them. These acts, as he calls them, are pedestrian acts.
