22 Stops

22 Stops

22 stops: Doel is part of 22 stops, an ongoing durational walking project by Katerina Drakopoulou, developed across different cities, landscapes and public sites since 2016. The project is structured as a walking performance made of twenty-two stops: at each stop, the body enters into relation with a specific site through stillness, slowness, micro-movement, sculptural image and embodied attention. Each location is marked by a chalk number on the ground, creating a temporary map of presence, memory and place.

Each iteration follows this structure, but is composed anew in response to the textures, surfaces, atmospheres, histories and social rhythms of the place where it unfolds. This version is created specifically for Doel and will not be shown elsewhere in this form.

Returning to Made of Walking almost exactly ten years after participating in its first edition in Delphi, Katerina brings 22 Stops into a new collective chapter, where movement, attention and place become inseparable elements of a living artistic experience.

Participants will gain a heightened, unhurried attentiveness to Doel’s visible and half-visible layers, textures and thresholds as light changes, while encountering simple embodied tools for experiencing place with movement, imagination and shared presence.

The performative walk can be attended independently, but participants are warmly invited to join the preceding programme:

17:00 – De Doolen, Food Forest and Community Visit
Guided visit to the community garden and food forest.
18:00 – Lecture
Nature, Environment and Sustainability by Isolde Vandemoortele (Avansa Centraal Vlaanderen, Belgium).
19:00 – Community Gathering

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.

WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.

We acknowledge the support of the EU Creative Europe Cooperation grant program in the framework of the European project WALC (Walking Arts and Local Community).

Invitation to Backwards Walkings

We meet and talk just a bit about this instruction that seems to have been hidden in plain sight for some centuries (during which it has been valued as figurative, rather than being taken literally) then walk backwards for a while, together in time and separately in space, then meet again for lunch together.
