5 walks, 5 trees, 5 poems

5 trees, 5 walks, 5 poems - event image

Starting in September and ending in November, participants are invited on 5 walks through Craigmillar Castle Park, Edinburgh (Sept 12, 26, Oct 10, 24, and Nov 7). We’ll be walking together in friendly conversation, enjoying moments of silence and learning more about the ecology of woodlands and our relationship with trees.

The walks include opportunities to deepen our relationship with one another and the natural world through mindful walking, drawing, poetry and conversation. We’ll also be reflecting on autumn as a season of endings and beginnings and asking what this time can teach us about our own life journeys.

Facilitated by Jonathan Baxter (artist and peer-educator), with contributions from Sarah Gittins (a visual artist offering responsive drawing workshops using natural and foraged materials) and Elly Kinross (Craigmillar Castle Park Engagement Officer, sharing ecological know-how and some crafting activities). There will also be other creative encounters en route, including time spent with 5 native trees.

In addition to the walks, participants will be invited to share their experiences through a post-walk publication that includes drawings, poetry and other documentation. (This aspect of the project is optional. Participants can enjoy the walks without contributing to the publication.)

Everyone is welcome. No experience is necessary. The walks are on accessible paths and through undulating woodland. If you have accessibility needs or other questions please contact Jonathan at jb4change@gmail.com or tel. 07954123543. The walks will begin and end at Bridgend Farmhouse.

This project is supported by Art Walk Projects (with funding from Paths for All), Bridgend Farmhouse and Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust. It forms part of Jonathan Baxter’s continuing embedded ‘Craigmillar & Communities Walking Residency’ commissioned by Art Walk Projects.
