Biological field stations and marine labs are place-based institutions primarily focused on science research, science education, and public engagement with science. In the past few decades, there has been a growing interest among field stations and marine labs to invite artists to participate in artist residency programs, art education, and community arts events. We are delighted to have Nancy Lowe, author of the recent Ecotones guide, present her findings regarding artist interventions, and to offer further opportunities for walking artists to be supported by field stations and marine laboratories.

Through the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS), Nancy Lowe coordinates Ecotones, a network of field stations and marine labs that have arts programs or are interested in designing a new arts program. Recently she authored the Ecotones Guide for Arts at Field Stations and Marine Labs, second edition. At this virtual meeting, Nancy will present an introduction to this work at the intersection of art, science, and the environment. The presentation will address:

• What is the history and what are the aims of these art-science interdisciplinary partnerships? 
• What is their value – for artists, for scientists, and for the public? 
• What have been some of the outcomes? 
• Where will they lead in the future, and how might they benefit you and your work?

The presentation will include a selection of contemporary artworks produced at field stations and marine labs, made by artists working in a variety of media and genres.
