John Cage once said, “A sound is perceived as disturbing – unless you listen to it.”
In 1972, R. Murray Schafer went much further in his study The Tuning of the World and recognized the sounds of our everyday environment as essential for the well-being and even the health of the human being. Improving and stabilizing the quality and balance of these regular soundscapes (a soundscape) is the main concern of the now globally important movement of “acoustic ecology”.
The explo-soundwalks offered since 2014 are guided excursions into the manifold “symphony of everyday life” – which we all constantly help shape, for better or for worse. An introduction at the beginning and a final discussion once again consciously reflect the experienced soundscapes and their sound peculiarities in comparison.
The soundwalks take place before one of our concerts and are laid out in such a way that all participants are back in the exploratory in time for the concert. The soundwalks are conceived and directed by Thomas Gerwin.
