Breaking the Dead Silence: Book Launch Bristol

Breaking the Dead Silence book cover

A book launch in the same building as the toppled statue memorialising Edward Colston. ‘Breaking the Dead Silence: Engaging with the Legacies of Empire and Slave-Ownership in Bath and Bristol’s Memoryscapes’, published by Liverpool University Press, 19 diverse voices explore esonances and reverberations on the aftermath of the racist murder of George Floyd and the toppling of a statue to slave trader, Edward Colston, in Bristol. Three chapters are about different approaches to walking in the memoryscape and attending to reluctant sites of memory, one written by artist-reseacher Richard White. The launch is an opportunity to meet authors and continue discussion on the issues raised in the book. The book is available as a free download from the publisher

Bath Union Workhouse: a walk for the living with the route of the dead

This sound walk, created using Echoes xyz, guides participants through a reflective experience based on names and stories of those who died in the Bath Union Workhouse, collected over the two-year Walking the Names project. It includes contributions from walkers, live music by the Bath City Jubilee Waits, and served as a memorial during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Walking and Memory Mapping with artist Marlene Creates

Canadian artist Marlene Creates has used memory mapping in her work since 1986—maps drawn both by her and by others for her. Memory maps are examples of alternative maps, also called participatory maps, counter maps, living maps, deep maps, and even radical maps. Every map tells a story and alternative maps tell alternative stories. In this presentation, Marlene will

driftsinging

Drawing with (vocal) sound in response to place while passing through place. Driftsinging borrows from the Situationist Drift, and Baudelaire’s flâneur. Driftsinging also relates to the process of ‘sounding,’ the sonic measuring of distance and depth that locates position in place and ‘echo location’, the examination of place through sonic reflection and refraction, resonance and echo.
