Chor kontra Monument is an immersive audio walk and choral performance set in Leipzig’s Richard-Wagner-Hain park that explores the layered historical narratives embedded in the site. Using wireless headphones, participants traverse the park’s landscape, engaging physically and sonically with overlapping histories from the Weimar Republic, Nazi era, and East German period. The experience critically examines the legacy of Richard Wagner’s music and its entanglement with nationalist ideology, inviting reflection on how cultural memory and political history intersect in public spaces.

Organized by Frederike Moormann in collaboration with the Stadtkuratorin Leipzig, the event creatively deconstructs Wagner’s mythic status through a blend of sound art and performative chorale elements. This format allows attendees to navigate a charged historical terrain while experiencing a contemporary artistic interrogation of contested monuments and cultural heritage. The project situates itself within a broader discourse on how art can mediate and reconsider historical memory in the urban environment.
