Hidden Highland Park: A Tour of Art, Nature, and Community is a 90-minute artist-led psychogeographic walk through Highland Park in Pittsburgh. Guided by multidisciplinary artist Marlana Adele Vassar, the tour explores the intersection of public art, community life, and natural environments in shaping participants’ experience of the park. Beginning at Giuseppe Moretti’s historic Welcome sculptures and ending at Urban Conga’s interactive installation Together, the route covers approximately 1.3 miles of varied terrain, highlighting artworks including legal graffiti, ecological sculptures, and Vassar’s own public piece Flora. Participants encounter community-driven projects, environmental landmarks such as a waterfall and bridge, and gather in spaces that reveal how generational contributions influence the park’s evolving character.
Through slowing down, observing, and conversing, the walk invites reflection on how art and nature co-produce a sense of place and uncover stories embedded in familiar landscapes. Vassar’s practice, focused on transformation and spatial experience, informs the tour’s conceptual depth, balancing bold design with layered symbolism. This event offers an opportunity to engage with Highland Park’s cultural and ecological fabric from refreshed perspectives, connecting personal memory, community narratives, and public art within a shared urban environment.
