A documentary film by Christos Ioannidis (Natural Pixels Productions, Greece, 2020)
Can one create art simply by walking? Can a walk become a work of art, as a painting emerges from a canvas or a film from a camera? What is walking art, and where does it reside—in tangible works, embodied experience, performance or process?
Is Walking Art? explores these questions through the first international walking arts gathering, held in Prespa, Greece, in 2019, merging two earlier initiatives Made of Walking and Visual March to Prespa . Bringing together artists, researchers and theorists from around the world, the documentary follows a community of walkers as they converse, create and move through one of Europe’s most extraordinary landscapes. Walking becomes a medium for artistic expression, ecological inquiry and collective imagination, inviting viewers into a dialogue about place, time, memory and the body.
The screening will be preceded by a conversation with the artists participating in the Made of Walking residency in Beveren, creating a bridge between the origins of the project in Prespa and the current project in Belgium.
Director Christos Ioannidis will also join the Made of Walking residency during the following week to film the Beveren activities for a new documentary.

About the filmmaker
Christos Ioannidis is a Greek filmmaker, photographer and visual artist based in Thessaloniki. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Florina, he holds a Master’s degree from the University of the Aegean specialising in Documentary Film Production. His work combines photography, moving image and documentary to explore landscape, artistic practice and human relationships with place. A lifelong mountaineer and nature enthusiast, he has exhibited his work internationally and has become one of the key visual chroniclers of the contemporary walking arts movement.
Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.
WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.
