Taking place as a key component of the WAP nomadic artistic residency, join us for a cafe discussion with artists live from the Stockholm archipelago.
WAP (Walking as Practice) is an annual Walking Artist Residency bringing together international walking artists. In previous years themes covered include:
- WAP25 Walking As Passion – Embodied Thinking (North)
- WAP24 –Spaces of Anticipation (North)
- WAP23 – Attentive Walking (North)
This year it will be nomadic, as artists will be walking across the Stockholm Archipelago. WAP26 frames walking towards political aesthetics, incorporating approaches of entanglement, proximity and co-becoming. Walking as Social Imagination as a way of being with the landscape, nature and each other’s practices.

Anna Viola Hallberg writes: “The 2026 WAP programme unfolds nomadically across the Stockholm archipelago walking in the imagined footsteps of Peter Weiss while engaging the theoretical and political trajectories of Gloria Anzaldúa Bing Song, Paola Bacchetta and Karen Barad. Across these distinct practices movement is approached as a relational mode of thinking that unsettles fixed identities, territorial logics and linear histories opening possibilities for ethical engagement with place and with others. Rather than functioning as direct references these figures provide conceptual orientations through which walking becomes a means of negotiating fragmented belonging, historical responsibility, privilege displacement and embodied experience.
During five days we cover a stretch of 74 kilometers (Landsort-Finnhamn) as we move through the south and mid Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. We approach various local communities and focus on social imagination: walking as a way of thinking with the landscape, history, migration, memory and more-than-human worlds. WAP26, entails public walks, individual and group elaborative walks in the archipelago Aug 6-11 and on Aug 13th then we have the public share session, walks and walk cafe.
The archipelago walks will include aspects of: investigates affect ritual and religion in prehistoric and Animist perspective – drawing while walking – repetition memory – geography of crossings separations labour movement – human and more-than-human landscapes and how our movements are shaped by histories borders migration routes and invisible relationships with place – artists presented on”: https://walkingaspractice.org/wap26/
Due to the limitations on pitching tents on the islands (most want that), the residency is limited 6 this year.
We will visit: Landsort – Nåttarö – Sandhamn – Finnhamn – Ingmarsö weather conditions, public walks etc.

- Stockholm Aug 12-14, a work-in-progress exhibition and presentation by artists, and public walks etc
Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.
WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.

• +2 WAP26 (Walking as Practice, 2026)
The WAP26 program turned nomadic as we walk the Stockholm Archipelago. This time we walk with the collective in addition we open up 2-4 positions for artists that we don’t already know and three by invitation. We spend 5 nights in tent out in the archipelago and 4-5 at your select accommodation in Stockholm. WAP26 takes place August 5-14 (including arrival/departure day).
Invitation to Backwards Walkings
We meet and talk just a bit about this instruction that seems to have been hidden in plain sight for some centuries (during which it has been valued as figurative, rather than being taken literally) then walk backwards for a while, together in time and separately in space, then meet again for lunch together.
Australian Walking Artists 24/25
The first in what we expect will be an ongoing series, this book presents the work of 26 members of Australian Walking Artists. Each member speaks passionately about their work and the place walking plays in creative practice. 24/25 includes an essay by Molly Wagner that traces the organisation’s history and walking art in Australia.
