Kairakuen – Starlight Passage and Soundscape Garden is an itinerant site-specific performance held within the historic Kairakuen Garden in Mito, Japan. Participants enter through the Omote-mon Gate and traverse four distinct nocturnal groves, each featuring live musical installations that respond to the natural environment’s spatial and acoustic qualities. The journey unfolds over approximately an hour, with sounds shaped by the garden’s scenery and audience movement, merging landscape and sound into a unified artistic experience.
Following this walking segment, the event culminates at Miharashi Plaza with a seated concert featuring the Naoyuki Manabe Gagaku Ensemble. The program brings together ancient Japanese court music (gagaku) and contemporary compositions by Kaito Nakahori, juxtaposing traditional melodies with modern interpretations on instruments such as shō, oboe, violin, and shakuhachi. This blending of historic and avant-garde styles highlights the cultural depth of Kairakuen, creating a contemplative evening where music and nature intersect.
