La walking event “La Cache,” held at the Domaine de la Tour de Cesson in Saint-Brieuc, is an immersive dawn headphone walk that lasts about an hour. Participants follow a locally crafted fictional narrative that weaves together the site’s many historical layers—from its origin as a medieval fortress built in the late 14th century, through its 19th-century transformation into a private estate, to its use during World War II as part of the Atlantic Wall defenses. The walk uniquely integrates the natural environment and ambient sounds of the domain, inviting walkers to experience the landscape as an active component of the story.
Created by the Rennes-based collective Ars Nomadis with the involvement of nearly a hundred local residents, the soundwalk does not offer a straightforward historical tour. Instead, it presents a multi-dimensional exploration where the domain’s past functions—fortress, residence, refuge—resonate beneath the present-day forest, ruins, and bay views. The event exemplifies contemporary walking art that combines heritage, sound, and site-specific storytelling, revealing the Domaine de la Tour de Cesson as a living palimpsest shaped by centuries of human presence and natural elements.
