La Cache

La Cache is a dawn headphone walk through the Domaine de la Tour de Cesson in Saint-Brieuc, France, created by the collective Ars Nomadis. This immersive soundwalk, lasting around one hour, guides participants through a multi-layered landscape that intertwines the medieval fortress remains, a 19th-century estate, World War II bunkers, and coastal woodland. Through a locally authored fictional narrative delivered via headphones, the experience activates the environment’s ambient sounds and historical echoes, inviting walkers to traverse centuries of strategic uses—from a defensive stronghold to a place of refuge—and the personal stories embedded in the site.

The format encourages a sensory dialogue between voice, music, and the natural and built features of the promontory overlooking the bay of Saint-Brieuc. With contributions from nearly 100 local residents, including musicians and school groups, the project emphasizes collective memory and site-specific storytelling rather than conventional historical narration. The Tour de Cesson itself is a protected monument, illustrating layers of history and cultural geography that intersect with issues of heritage preservation and ecological sensitivity within a Natura 2000 protected area.
