Passing By Paradise: Photo-Audio Walk is an immersive event set in the vibrant neighborhood of Geylang, Singapore. Participants navigate through the area’s lorongs, streets, and back alleys, guided by an audio track paired with photographic imagery. This sensory experience weaves together residents’ personal memories and narratives related to migration, belonging, and everyday life, revealed through hidden site-specific installations located in local shops, homes, and public spaces. The walk invites reflection on notions of home and root-growing, enhanced by auditory and visual elements that frame ordinary scenes such as the flutter of laundry, crow-filled trees at dusk, and the glow of a phone screen in the dark.
Created by artists Dorothy Wong Ka Chung and Benjamin Ryser, the event situates intimate stories of Geylang’s community—ranging from childhood comforts and business encounters to distant homelands—within the physical fabric of the neighborhood. By layering photographic art with sound, Passing By Paradise offers a contemplative journey connecting place, memory, and identity through the urban streetscape. The walk highlights Geylang’s complex social and cultural textures, inviting participants to discover subtle meanings hidden throughout the locale.
