Passing By Paradise: Photo-Audio Walk is an immersive walking experience through the vibrant neighborhood of Geylang in Singapore. Designed by artists Dorothy Wong Ka Chung and Benjamin Ryser, this event interweaves residents’ memories with site-specific photographic and audio installations located in local shops, homes, alleys, and public spaces. Participants follow an audio-guided route that accompanies images and intimate soundscapes, such as the ringing of an old telephone or ambient street sounds, which together frame everyday scenes and stories of migration, belonging, and community life.
The walk invites reflection on concepts of home and identity by guiding visitors through evocative vignettes—romantic moments at a soya milk stall, childhood comfort food cravings, and recollections of journeys across seas and neighborhoods. The installations act as portals, revealing hidden narratives attached to physical sites, and encouraging participants to discover the “secret code” of paradise found in the textures and histories of Geylang’s streets. This format blends photographic art and storytelling, enriching the urban landscape through personal and collective memories.
