Passing By Paradise: Photo-Audio Walk offers participants an immersive exploration of Geylang’s Lorongs, streets, and back alleys through a multisensory format combining audio narration, photographic imagery, and site-specific installations. Created by Dorothy Wong Ka Chung and Benjamin Ryser, the walk weaves together intimate memories and narratives shared by Geylang residents, capturing themes of migration, belonging, and everyday life. Participants encounter hidden artworks in local shops, homes, and public spaces, where sounds in the audio guide—such as the ringing of an old telephone or ambient café noise—frame the familiar yet overlooked urban environment.
This event situates the act of walking as a mode of engaging with the neighborhood’s layered histories and personal stories, from childhood comfort foods to distant homelands. The photo-audio format enables visitors to connect visual and auditory elements, deepening their understanding of how culturally and emotionally significant places are embedded within the urban fabric of Geylang. The walk is part of the Singapore International Photography Festival and highlights the relationship between photography, sound art, and site-specific storytelling.
