A literary guided walk by Frome collective Poetry in Motion to honour Emma Sheppard, a Victorian social reformer. Commissioned by LISTEN, A Season of Sound Art, hosted by Black Swan Arts and curated by Helen Ottaway.

Saturday 31 August, 2019 10.00am Start: Fromefield House, Bath Rd, Frome, BA11 2HF, UK  Free event but Booking essential – visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/listen-emma-sheppard-sound-walk-tickets-64616487654

The walk will be from the Sheppard family home at Fromefield, up to the old Workhouse, now beautifully restored as Ecos Court housing, then down to the Town Hall (at one time the headquarters of the Poor Law Guardians) for refreshments and over to Trinity Churchyard to see the newly restored grave of Emma Sheppard

There will be talks by: John Payne – briefly on the pre-1834 Poor Law Reform Act workhouses; Liz Corfield, a Frome Society member who has researched the history of Frome Workhouse / Ecos Court; Crysse Morrison, who has written about Emma In ‘Frome Unzipped’; Nick Hersey, writer of an excellent article about Emma in the 2017 Frome Society Yearbook, who is coming all the way from Hitchin, Herts to join us! So a feast of stories, and no doubt extracts from Emma’s incredibly important book ‘Sunshine in the workhouse‘, based on her experiences as a Workhouse Visitor here in Frome. A Victorian best-seller, no less.

Children welcome; also dogs if kept on a lead.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light waterproof coat just in casse.
