Our interactive, one-day seminar on The Visual March to Prespes: Walking with concepts and images will be held on Friday the 9th of January 2026 from 18:00 to 21:00 in the Contemporary Greek Art Institute (ISET) and streamed online.
The Visual March to Prespes is a process that is taking place in the Prespes area since 2007 and is comprised of actions that look into the landscape, history, culture as well as the ecological concerns that pertain to the area without losing sight of locality and its specificities. For the period of 2025 to 2027, The Visual March to Prespes acts as the coordinating partner of Walking and Local Communities (WALC), which sets the area of Prespes as the site of the International Centre for the Walking Arts.
The Visual March to Prespes is organized by the 1st Painting Workshop of the School of Visual Arts of the University of Western Macedonia. Visual artist, Art Professor and supervisor of the 1st Painting workshop Yiannis Ziogas acts as the coordinator of TheVisual March to Prespes.
The one-day seminar presenting The Visual March to Prespes which will take place in the Contemporary Greek Art Institute (ISET) is organized with a focus on interactivity and will include narrated stories, film screenings and discussions on Walking and Art. The presentation will help to highlight the multifarious aspects of the March, the ideas it has engendered, the individuals and communities that have been included in its processes while in the unique environment of the Prespes area and the networks among international partners that have been formed around its unfolding. The seminar will be organized in three phases:
Part 1: Is Walking Art? Film screening of the documentary directed by Christos Ioannidis.
Part 2: The Visual March: the ideas, the visuals, the practices. Discussion coordinated by Dr Aspasia Voudouri, University of West Attica. Participants: Yannis Ziogas, Visual Artist, Art Professor, Dept of Fine and Applied Arts, School of Arts, University of Western Macedonia, Faye Tzanetoulakou, Art Historian, AICA Intenational, Panayiotis Dafiotis, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Fine and Applied Arts, School of Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Part 3: Experiential Aspects of a Place (3-minute narration, teasers, open discussion). Coordinated by Nikos Patsavos, Assοciate Professor, Dept. of Architecture, University of Ioannina. Participants: Iro Grigoriadi, artist, Nikos Theodoropoulos, Historian, Phd Candidate, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Sofia Kiriakou, visual artist, Nora Lefa, digital artist, Associate Professor, Dept. of Fine Arts & Art Sciences, University of Ioannina, Jason Palyvos, visual artist, Aimilia Siafarika, artist, Vassiliki Sagkioti, visual artist.

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.
WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.

The Blue Parade (what the body knows)
The Blue Parade is a participatory walking artwork created by Stefaan van Biesen and Annemie Mestdagh for the “Walking Practices/Walking Art/Walking Bodies” meeting in Prespes, Greece. The piece consists of a portable, ultramarine-blue textile structure carried collectively through the landscape as a “nomadic library.” Participants walk together, collect small objects from the environment, and place them in attached PET bottles, creating a mobile archive of local memory and identity. The act of carrying the canvas fosters awareness, cooperation, and a temporary community, turning the walk into a sensory, reflective ritual that highlights embodied knowledge, shared experience, and themes of journey and displacement.
The Green Line
In the summer of 1995 I performed a walk with a leaking can of blue paint in the city of São Paulo. The walk was then read as a poetic gesture of sorts. In June 2004, I re-enacted that same performance with a leaking can of green paint by tracing a line following the portion of the ‘Green Line’ that runs through the municipality of Jerusalem.
Prespa as a community-based walking art project
The Prespa International Walking Arts Encounters 2025 Walking Home - Walking in Transition is this year’s culmination of a process that started in 2007. In that year several artists, scholars, and academics walked from Florina to Prespa in a walking process named Visual March to Prespes of 50 km that aimed to initiation of a process of discovery of the place, the community, and of ourselves
