Walking by Moonlight

Women walking at night

Women walking, The city, At night, is a performance series in the form of collective walks between women. It was began by Eléonore Ozanne in Seville, Spain in September 2022 on the night of the ‘Harvest Moon’, and has subsequently taken place in 11 cities across Spain.

They aim to investigate and think from the lived experience about the presence of our body, at night, in public spaces. With the idea of creating an aesthetic and relational experience of walking, the walks are guided by chance, following the path marked by the full moon.

“What if we get together to go for a walk at night?” asks Eléonore, “a collective walk, at night, between women in several cities at the same time.”

Guided only by the light along the path of the trajectory of the full moon, women walk together, creating both a poetic and vindictive experience to explore what their bodies mean, at night, in the city.

This event will be hosted by Clare Qualmann, founder of the Walking Artists Network.

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.

WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.

  1. Thank you, that was great. Thanks to Eleonore and Clare (and the EU and Andrew!) I am the contact person for Walking by Moonlight in Edinburgh on Sep 18, so if you’d like to walk here with us, please do contact me (tamsinlgrainger@gmail.com).
I was very disappointed not to be there on the night. Is there a record of the chat that I can download, please? Tamsin

  2. I’m leading a women’s Walk by Moonlight tonight in San Francisco, CA, USA. Happy to share some photos, if you’d like!

We’re adding a meditation and mooncakes ritual before the walk. Here’s the description: Traditionally, the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) is a time for family and friends to come together, share stories, and admire the moon’s beauty. A highlight of the celebration is enjoying mooncakes (月饼) — a rich, symbolic pastry representing reunion and good fortune.

In addition to sharing mooncakes, I’ll also offer a short Full Moon Refuge meditation from the Bon lineage, one of Tibet’s oldest spiritual traditions. This practice, known as the Three Precious Pills, guides us through three doorways — stillness, silence, and spaciousness — leading us back to the source and our inner self.

Afterwards, we’ll join women around the world as we take a short collective walk exploring our relationship with the city at night.

oversupinate

People who jog, run, and sprint have their share of problems that slow-moving people can barely comprehend. One is oversupination. As the OED defines it, to oversupinate is “To run or walk so that the weight falls upon the outer sides of the feet to a greater extent than is necessary, desirable, etc.” A 1990 Runner’s World article gets to the crux of the problem: “It’s hard to ascertain exactly what percentage of the running population oversupinates, but it’s a fraction of the people who think they do.” Credits to Mark Peters.
