Walking together – about WALC and Made of Walking

Curator Geert Vermeire and artist Stefaan van Biesen will present WALC and Made of Walking during an artist’s talk at Hof ter Welle in Beveren. This talk follows a digital interactive exhibition and a series of performances, touching on social and ecological art practices, held from January 26 to February 2 in the venue’s chapel and gardens.
Previously implemented in Greece, Catalonia, Cyprus, France, and Portugal, Made of Walking—alongside the Visual March to Prespa initiative in Greece—served as an inspiration for the European-funded project Walking Art and Local Communities (WALC). WALC establishes an International Centre for Research and Practice of Walking Art at Lake Prespa, Greece, bringing together artists to explore walking as both an artistic practice and a tool for community engagement in rural and natural landscapes.
During the talk, Vermeire and Van Biesen will reflect on their two-decade collaboration, which began in Beveren and evolved into the Europe-wide WALC project. They will also share insights into how artists, nature, and local communities can connect through walking art and invite participants to the talk to become part of this growing movement.

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, Creative Europe, starting in January 2024 for four years. With seven partners from five countries, WALC establishes an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, in Prespa, Greece, at the border with Albania and North Macedonia, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts.

WALC builds on the previous work of hundreds of artists and researchers already practicing Walking Arts as a collaborative medium, and having met at the significant previous walking arts events and encounters in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and during online activities at walk · listen · create.

We acknowledge the support of the EU Creative Europe Cooperation grant program in the framework of the European project WALC (Walking Arts and Local Community).
