On Monday July 5, Regin Igloria and Jenny Polak will transmit a livestream from Regin as he approaches the Broadview deportation processing center outside Chicago, IL.
For ‘What Moves Between Us?’ artists Regin Igloria and Jenny Polak will perform a new walk with each in a different country, tracing systems of forced deportation and containment of immigrants in the US and France. Jenny walked in Paris from Montmartre to the immigrant detention centre (CRA) in the Bois de Vincennes.

The presentation builds upon the 3 days 42 miles, Chicago to Gary Walk with the Mobile Speakers Podium, during which the two artists asked passersby to think about the forced removal of people from the Chicago area via the Gary Airport Deportation Hub.

On Monday July 5 Together they will present livestream walking and archive images as they discuss questions raised by their practice of creating mobile objects and walking freely with these objects in public space. They will discuss the idea of their motion and free interaction with the public, as a surrogate for people who are unjustly deprived of freedom.

Background: The Mobile Speakers Podium is a deployable speakers’ podium with a dual platform, providing an elevated space for two people to speak out. It is a mini-stage on wheels, whose framing structure depicts the conjoining of ‘suburban house’ and ‘prison fence,’ to invoke the needed voices and ever-presence of the incarcerated among the free in a country that locks up 2 million people.

Regin and Jenny pulled the Mobile Speakers Podium on foot from Chicago to Gary, IN, to draw attention to the forced transport of people through Gary International Airport, the deportation hub for the Midwest. This durational performance placed our bodies into a stressful action over three days, provoking questions as our route passed through extremely different neighborhoods. Students from the Steel City Academy took over the Speakers Podium at the airport, and hosted speak-out and zine-making events.

We seek to channel the pain and anguish of the deportation experience, typically hidden from view, for a varied and mostly mystified audience along the way. As we pull structures, our physical exertion, observed by those whose everyday experience may not include either extended walking or family separations, asked people to imagine what such things would feel like.

This summer, the Mobile Speakers Podium for Citizens and Noncitizens is again on the move, and will be deployed and programmed at Compound Yellow, an experimental space in Chicago, IL, as part of Regin’s residency project ‘Everything Moves With Me’, focused on his walking cart objects. Meanwhile Jenny will be in a residency at the Kadist Foundation in Paris, France, and will perform walks mapping the detention and expulsion of migrants from France through the Parisian urban space. When Regin walks to the detention center, Jenny will follow from Europe, livestreaming his experience for the Conference audience. Please join us.
