How can a guided tour become an artistic practice?
This article explores how artists have transformed the guided tour into a performative and participatory form of walking. From Dada excursions and Surrealist walks to Situationist dérives, Fluxus Free Flux-Tours and the Spanish Revista Caminada, it traces a genealogy of artistic walking practices that challenge institutional narratives and invite alternative ways of experiencing place.
The article also presents La visita desviada (The Deviated Tour), a site-specific walking performance developed in Asturias (Spain), where performative instructions, chance and collective action reshape the familiar format of the guided tour. Rather than transmitting knowledge about a place, the walk becomes an open framework for attention, play and shared discovery.
