One way to acknowledge migration

Reading Geert Vermeire‘s latest newsletter, I was struck with how important walking art and walking artists have been in acknowledging those unfortunate people who have had to leave their homes, often migrating over vast distances, or switching to cultures unlike their own, learning new languages and how to get about day to day among people,

a soft armour

I threw a simple idea in the air. To walk from my house in Amsterdam to the Nomadic Village 2013 in the south of France and invite people to support me in any way they like and symbolically walk with me. Choose a day, give me something to walk with and in

Sewing into walking

Filmed near sacred Kyoung Ju, Sewing into walking shows Kimsooja wandering and sewing fabrics into a quiet ritual. Walking becomes stitching, exploring memory, migration, and the body as a living bundle.

Sound walk
No longer available
Avian Humanoids, a production by composer, producer, and performer Evelien van den Broek, is a soundwalk that transports you to the world of mythological creatures, uncanny sounds, and musical fantasies. You walk from tree to tree, to five unique trees in Oosterpark, Amsterdam (NL). As soon as you stand beneath them, the tree comes to life, and you hear the rustling of leaves and the fluttering of wings. This isn’t just any park; these aren’t just any trees. Here live the Avian Humanoids. Part human, part bird. In their tree, they begin to sing. As they sit above you and fly around you, you listen to their song.

AVIAN HUMANOIDS. A SUPERNATURAL SOUNDWALK.
Bird people have featured in myths and folklore since immemorial time. Avian Humanoids is based on well-known mythological figures such as Gamayun, Morpheus, Thanatos, Ba, Harpies and Kinnars. Originating from different parts of the world. They are wise, with predictive gifts, full of love, or evil. From their tree they look down on humanity below, at the struggles, the search for the meaning of life, love, greed and short-sightedness.

FROM TREE TO TREE
Avian Humanoids is a supernatural soundwalk. You walk from tree to tree, to five special trees in the Oosterpark, Amsterdam (NL). As soon as you stand under it, the tree comes to life, you hear the rustling of leaves and the fluttering of wings. This is not just a park, these are not just trees. The Avian Humanoids live here. Part human, part bird. They start singing in the tree. As they sit above you and fly around you, listen to their song.

SOUND ART
With each tree you experience different bird people, their own sound and a new composition. The lyrics of the songs are inspired by mythological creatures and the melody is partly derived from various special songbirds. Avian Humanoids can best be described as sound art and is a mix of contemporary classical, electronica, with elements of opera. The sound walk consists of experimental compositions that were created with the help of voice transformation software and the Dolby Atmos surround sound system.

We add an extra layer to your perception of the real world and we cordially invite you to immerse yourself in the world of Avian Humanoids.

The Avian Humanoids only visit the Oosterpark in summer, before they migrate to warmer places again. This walk will be available until September 16th 2025.
