Big Walk to Golden Mountain (Punctum, 2017) marked 160 years of Chinese migration to the Victorian goldfields, retracing the 500 km trek from Robe (SA) by Guangdong gold seekers. The month-long project, part of Asia TOPA, explored the cultural and environmental legacy of this journey through art, walking, and performance.
Part 1 – A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step
Residency and exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, featuring scrolls, films, performances, and installations by Jude Anderson, Miles Bennett, Jacques Soddell, Eugenia Lim, Gabriele Brauer, and Pia Johnson. Presented during White Night Ballarat and later at the Castlemaine State Festival.
Part 2 – Walking in the Footsteps
A participatory walking workshop at Vaughan Springs, led by artists including Anderson, Thorpe, Symons, Beckwith, and Chen. Inspired by Daoist walking practices, it connected participants to the historical Robe-to-Goldfields route.
Part 3 – Interior View
An installation and sensory experience in a zen courtyard evoking Jaara Country’s gold landscapes, culminating in tea ceremonies led by Celina Lei and a conversation with Charles Zhang and Eugenia Lim on migration and legacy.
