The Billycan Project is an innovative walking art initiative that combines movement and visual art. Participants carry a Billycan, which houses a weighted pen over paper, while they walk. This setup captures even the simplest movements and moments of stillness, producing spontaneous and poetic drawings. The project encourages deep engagement with the environment, allowing walkers to map their locales and create unique, dynamic artworks. By putting walking at the center of the experience, the Billycan Project fosters creativity, enhances perception of place, and promotes collective action and spatial engagement within communities. And a unique memento of the experience.
This project has been evolving and has become a dynamic endeavor ever since, growing in both concept and scope. Recently, the project was part of the Canberra Art Biennial 2024, specifically through an event called “Moon Walks” around Lake Burley Griffin, in 2023/22 ‘Night Walks’ through the 100 year old Cork Forest in the National Arboretum, all hosted by Localjinni. This latest iteration invited community participation, with walkers carrying the Billycan as a way to visualise the exploration of place, fostering connections within the landscape and creating a drawing of the experience like a true selfie image..
The project’s evolution reflects a continuous and active engagement with new audiences and sites, keeping it relevant and aligned with Marsarto24’s focus on recent work.
The Billycan: An Analogue Drawing Tool
The Billycan is an analogue drawing tool designed to capture the essence of walking through visual art. It encourages participants to engage deeply with their surroundings, creating spontaneous and serendipitous artworks that reflect their journey. As they walk, the movement and interaction with the environment translate into unique, dynamic drawings. This process supports participants in being the creators and mappers of their own locales, producing elegant and poetic drawings. The Billycan Project: Integrates walking as art, using a Billycan tool to translate movements into spontaneous drawings, enhancing the walking experience. It explores psychogeography and community engagement, deepening the walking art discourse with a blend of analogue and digital mediums.
