Chance Encounters (City of London, 1994) is a nocturnal performance and photographic series by Rut Blees Luxemburg that explores presence, identity, and social interaction in the urban public sphere after dark. In collaboration with Sophy Rickett, Luxemburg navigated the city streets in performative “cos-play” as corporate executives, engaging with strangers and documenting the encounters that unfolded. The work captures the charged stillness of London’s streets once bodies have moved on, revealing traces, atmospheres, and social currents that are often invisible in everyday urban life.

Originally exhibited in the late 1990s at the artist-run space Plummet, the project interrogates how women inhabit, claim, and reframe the urban night. Through these nocturnal interventions, Chance Encounters highlights the political and poetic significance of occupying public space—challenging gendered norms, surveillance, and the privatization of city streets. Luxemburg’s photographs from this series, alongside works such as London – A Modern Project, High Rise, document both a literal and performative engagement with the city, creating images that are at once socially reflective, atmospheric, and iconic.
