Sonic Sedimentation

Tanner Springs Park, located northwest of downtown Portland, reflects the area’s wetland history amid urban surroundings. This 40-minute Soundwalk, led by composer Yuan-Chen Li, uses guided listening and musical elements to explore themes of sedimentation and the interplay between natural sounds and urban noise.

This 18-minute stereo sound walk, set in a snowy field north of Hebden Bridge, UK, combines field recordings, ambient drones, and 1980s pop loops with a spoken monologue linking cultural figures like Leon Trotsky and Ian Curtis. The piece centers on photographer Charlie Meecham capturing the snowy scene used for Joy Division’s single "Atmosphere" cover, incorporating contributions from Paul Rooney and others.

Eavesdrop is a sonic nature trail in Otley running from 26th June to 3rd October 2021, featuring over 200 hours of field recordings from the town and nearby nature reserves. Five locations host wildlife-inspired sound pieces accessed via QR codes, with binaural recordings providing an immersive 3D audio experience enhanced by virtual instruments created from sampled field sounds.

Eavesdrop is a sonic nature trail taking place across Otley from 26th June – 3rd October 2021. It has been created from over 200 hours of field recordings captured throughout the town and its surrounding nature reserves.

Wildlife inspired sound pieces, accessed via QR codes, have been installed in five locations across Otley.

The sound and music has been recorded and mixed in binaural creating an immersive 3D sound world when experienced in situ on headphones.

Field recordings have been sampled and manipulated to create virtual instruments used to compose the musical underscore.
