A Needle Woman

Kimsooja's A Needle Woman (1999) contrasts her stillness against the fast-moving crowds in public spaces, symbolizing the migrant woman's silent endurance. The performance explores themes of displacement, labor, and the emotional toll of migration.

In Elémént, Michèle Magema weaves imagery of chained feet and laboring hands to explore feminism and the legacy of slavery, retelling history while reflecting on memory, identity, and her cultural and female experience.

In Elémént, the artist attempts to visualize implied, universal exotic projections. A voice hums, sensual feet clad in white accompany a hand picking cotton from the asphalt. A head, fragmented, moves in profile, balancing a basin. The same feet, with chained ankles, advance slowly in high heels. The three images coexist, carried by a long tracking shot that follows this woman, like the watermark of an evocation of the female condition in general.

Again, Michèle Magema tells and retells History through images. Drawing from archives and restoring balance to a rickety reality, she continues her singular quest, connected both to her own cultural diversity and to her feminine gender.

driftsinging

Drawing with (vocal) sound in response to place while passing through place. Driftsinging borrows from the Situationist Drift, and Baudelaire’s flâneur. Driftsinging also relates to the process of ‘sounding,’ the sonic measuring of distance and depth that locates position in place and ‘echo location’, the examination of place through sonic reflection and refraction, resonance and echo.
