Shelter I & II, quartzite ridge
Shelter I & II reflect Nici Cumpston’s deep connection to Country and the traces of Aboriginal presence in the landscape. Created from a serendipitous misprint, the two reversed images were paired to form an imagined place of refuge within a harsh environment.

I spent a lot of time in the area next to the river Mark, the river that flows through my city, Breda. It’s not a huge, wild or well-traversable river. But it has been and is very important for it’s surrounding area, influencing or being the main character in the events that took place here during history and before history was invented. From Neanderthals to butter smugglers, the river Mark has seen it all. It’s size may be petit but it’s beauty is grand, and many birds, insects and fish call the river home. It is a place i can come over and over again, there is always something that will fill my heart with joy: Seeing the swans land on the river to sleep, discovering where the carp come to mate, hearing the dragonflies zoom overhead while standing in the cool water, fishes zipping past my feet.
This small artwork was a test, an experiment or more accuratly a spirit-of-the-moment work:I was there and inspiration struck. I wanted to use all the wonderful blossom, without being greedy. Just a few twigs, nothing much. The wild bees have to eat as well. Using a mole hill as a pedestal i placed my frame, bringing attention to one of the beautiful chestnut trees standing on the banks of the river. A tree many pass without paying attention to it. I have passed it without paying attention to it. But not this day, this day it was getting it’s well-deserved attention by me. And i hope, by you as well now. I hope you are having a wonderful day, wherever you may be.
